Have you ever poured your time and energy into knitting a beautiful sweater, only to discover, after final assembly, that it doesn’t fit?
– Does that sweater sit in a closet? Or end up being given away?
– Are you sick of spending good money on yarn for sweaters you never get to wear?
– Are you a plus-size knitter who can’t find patterns you like in your size?
–Have you ever seen a darling sweater at the mall, and wished you could knit it yourself, if only you had a pattern?
Me, too.
I have been knitting since I was eight years old. I’ve spent many peaceful hours on handwork, and concentrating on a charted knitting pattern really takes me away from my problems. However, I learned in a hurry that the fun and creativity of knitting can be ruined if the finished article doesn’t fit.
I had my share of disasters, so I set about trying to find an easy way to design a sweater pattern. Believe me, I looked. And while I came across bits and pieces of good information, I couldn’t find one place where it was all together in one, easy-to-follow system.
I decided to come up with my own method of sweater design.
Now, I can sketch out the sweater I want to make, knit a swatch and get started. I don’t even have to figure out the whole pattern before I begin–I can write the pattern as I go. I only have to figure out the part I’m working on at that moment.
• If I find a yarn I love, I don’t have to search for a pattern–I write my own.
• If I see a ready-made sweater I would like to knit for myself, no problem.
• I still buy (yes, buy) published knitting patterns–I love having talented designers do the heavy lifting for me, and I want to support their wonderful work. And, yes, these days I am a plus-size knitter. With my method of sweater design, I can really understand the pattern and alter it with confidence.
• When I knit a sweater for a friend or family member, I know how to ensure a perfect fit–regardless of the wearer’s size.
If I can do this, so can you. If you’re thinking sweater design sounds complicated, let me reassure you. Yes, I learned how to knit a long time ago, but I’m no expert. I still enjoy taking knitting classes to learn new techniques and improve my skills. And even though I’ve taken several classes on sweater design, I’ve never seen a system that is as easy and as reliable as the one I use.
“…my answer to a question once asked–’What is the most common mistake knitters make?’–was that they follow the pattern!”
from her book,“Mother-Daughter Knits”
In my twenties, I knit three sweaters in a row, not one of which fit me.
One was a beautiful aran sweater that was so small it almost fit a child. I put down my knitting needles and didn’t pick them up for another twenty years.
When I started knitting again, I realized how much I’d missed the fun and creativity. But I wanted to be able to knit sweaters that really fit. So I read books on sweater design, took design classes, and studied patterns.
Some parts of designing a sweater are easy. But there was always a point where the instructions made me guess, required knitter’s graph paper, or even computer software! (If you’ve ever tried to draft a sleeve cap, you know what I’m talking about. Figuring out a v-neck is no picnic, either.) I wanted a simple, straightforward system that would provide clear, step-by-step instructions.
So I read more books, talked to knitting experts, and studied more patterns. Piece by piece, I “unraveled” the secret of easy sweater design (sorry, I couldn’t resist the pun).
Now I understand how to create a pattern from scratch, and how to alter an existing pattern for the perfect fit.
Sound Familiar?
• Have you ever sat, frustrated, with a hand-knitted sweater representing tens (if not hundreds!) of dollars and countless hours of time, and no wearable garment to show for your effort? I have.
• Have you looked at a sweater pattern and wished it had a set-in sleeve instead of (unflattering) dropped shoulders? Been there.
• Have you ever seen a darling ready-made sweater in a store and wished you had a pattern to make yourself one like it? Yep.
• Have you ever seen a great yarn and knew instantly what kind of sweater you wanted to make out of it, but been unable to find a pattern for that sweater? Check.
• And most painful, have you ever finished all the pieces of a sweater, and then let it languish because you dreaded the chore of final assembly? Oh, yeah.
Not any more! With my easy ONE-PIECE sweater design method, your sweater fits, and there’s no sewing, grafting or seaming!
With basic knitting skills and a tape measure, you can design a sweater…
… in one piece and using one circular needle.”
I’ve gone through the trial and error for you. I read books, deciphered diagrams, searched the internet, took classes, asked questions. Some of these sources offered vague or confusing information or offered templates for sweaters for the “average” size woman (whoever she is).
Even beginning knitters love this system!
For every part of a sweater where the design method wasn’t clear, I came up with a simple formula–for armholes, sleeves, shoulders and necklines. What I arrived at is a step-by-step method for designing a sweater as you go, based on your measurements. Start knitting the body–don’t worry about the rest until you get there!
I’ve shared this method with other knitters. The response convinced me that this method works. Even a beginning knitter can knit a successful sweater (that really fits!) using my method.
I have put the entire system into into an e-book–a step-by-step method that will guide you in designing your own sweaters. You’ll start at the very beginning with taking measurements and knitting a swatch. There are charts for tracking measurements and for doing the very simple arithmetic involved in designing each part of the sweater. You’ll find plenty of explanations, examples, diagrams and photos.
I do assume you have basic knitting skills–this is not a how-to-knit book. There are lots of great books and DVD’s out there that will teach you how to knit. And plenty more showing you various knitting tips and tricks. I’ve read most of them.
But I haven’t seen a book or DVD yet with such an easy, dependable system for designing a sweater from start to finish. I’ve done the legwork for you–start knitting tonight!
Am I saying that if you follow these steps I’m about to share with you, that you’ll be able to knit any sweater you see?
No way. There are way too many wonderful knitting techniques and styles to contain them in one book.
But what I am saying is that you will learn how to design a pullover or cardigan that will allow you to create dozens of terrific women’s sweaters–for yourself, family or friends.
After awhile, your friends will look to you as the knitting “guru” (it’s already happened to me, and as I said, I’m not an expert knitter). You will enjoy knitting so much more!
… and why I’ve decided to share it with you.
I got tired of the frustration of knitting sweaters that didn’t fit. When I finally came up with my method, I thought it was probably something advanced knitters already knew. Was I surprised when an expert knitter (and yarn shop owner!) confessed to me how often she’s knit a sweater that didn’t fit. Good grief–where does that leave the rest of us?
And I know of too many beginning knitters who put down their needles for good when their first project doesn’t fit–they think it’s their fault. What a shame.
That’s why I’ve decided to make these strategies available to you, in a handy e-book that you can download in the next five minutes…
